Active listening:-

Active listening means when you are listening to the client with all your senses. According to the Perinatal Mental Health Project, active listening includes listening to the client by your heart, body, ears, eyes, and mouth.

Verbal listening:-

This is the form of listening in which the counselor shows the interest through the words that the counselor speaks. Through this verbal communication, it shows more attention towards the client and encourages the patient to explore more about the problems and their causes. But for the counselor, they should not ask you any prejudice questions to the client.

Asking Questions:-

Asking questions is also a very important part of the therapeutic value. It allows the counselor to learn more about the client. The type of question which you will ask will tone up for the next sessions of counseling. Two type of questions being asked to the client:-

Open questions:-

This question helps counseller to collect important data from the client. It also helps to collect personal information from the client.

For answering the open question the client cannot say just yes or no in the answer, it needs to explore more and more to come up with a conclusion. A counselor cannot ask just an open question.

That question must have any intention and that must be therapeutic. The best question to start for the client is “how” and “what” which will be answered by the client about the whole situation.

Closed questions:-

This is basically yes or no answered questions. The client has to confirm his or her views on questions with simple yes or no response. Some times these types of questions do not help the counselor to get useful information from the client. so, they should be avoided. So the counselor will never get a satisfactory answer in the closed questions.

Feeling reflection:-

In feeling reflection, it makes the client hear the feelings which the client has expressed through their words. Sometimes the counselor has to see the descriptive feeling in the client statements. As it can be helpful for the counselor to look at clients the non-verbal cues.

Cognitive therapy:-

Cognition:- This the processes during which data returning from the senses is “transformed, reduced, elaborated, recovered, and used.

The term information used here as sensory input from the environment that informs us about something that is happening there. The cognitive processes are thus the mental processes involved in knowing the world- such as they are important in perception, attention, thinking, problem-solving, and memory.

Behavioral therapy:-

Humanistic therapy:-

This theory studies about people’s behavior and makes them aware of a set of feelings and attitudes and a certain sense of who we are. The main focused in this theory is on self.

The self term has two different sets of meanings. One set has dealt with people’s attitudes about themselves, their picture of the way how they looked and give the impact about they believe and how they have on others and their perceived traits, abilities, foibles, and weakness.

This collection constitutes what is known as the self-concept, or self-image,” attitudes, feelings, perceptions, and evaluations of….self as an object”. The second set meaning relates to the executive functions- processes by which the individual manages, copes, thinks, remembers, perceives and plans.

Interpersonal therapy:-

This therapy helps the person to know about the idea and energy of communications and interpersonal relationship.

This therapy focuses on communication and interpersonal behavior so that the person can understand how he can struggle for his issues and also help to fight at an emotional level also.

The principle of this therapy is if the person improves his interpersonal behavior and communication that he can receive more support and acceptance from others, family, and friends which can help them to improve mood and helps in reducing emotional issues.

Schema-Focused therapy:-

Schema is a cognitive system or an internal representation of the world (framework) which is used to organize the concept and actions for the new world in the mind.

In this therapy, the person understands to create a new healthier framework which he has already learned and also for new things which the person will learn in the future.

So this therapy will let the person reconstruct the mind with new creative ideas which change the view of the world. This therapy is suited for those who have longstanding mental health issues or borderline personality disorders.

Dialectical behavior therapy:-

This therapy is new and has become very popular. The main concept behind this therapy is it combines the concept of mindfulness with cognitive behavior therapy.

This therapy will make the person learn how to develop a stronger relationship. This therapy also make learned to the person to adjust in the situation which is happening in here and now and to react accordingly to any situations.

Eclectic therapy:-

For this therapy, many counselors has a different way to start. In this therapy, the counselor starts in one style and shift to another at a certain point during sessions.

In each session the therapists pick up the topic and started chooses another with its full extent in the whole session to know everything about certain situations. The therapist noticed the habit and behavior of the person during the session and noted them.

This therapy along with the counselors owns eclectic method gives good results. This therapy is also known as holistic therapy or integrative therapy.

Substance abuse therapy:-

Substance abuse therapy is especially indicated for those people who are addicted to prescription drugs, street drugs, alcohol. With this therapy, it helps these people to quit the use of addicted substances and make them clean and sober in character.

There are many programs are present which let the counselor know how to deal with substance abuse persons. Through this therapy, the counselor will help to remove the psychological craving which is developed for the substance and will tell the person everything about the withdrawal symptoms, and make your substance abuse free life.

Group therapy:-

It is intended to capture some of the essences of real life in a social context. Group therapy is sometimes a supplement to individual therapy, sometimes a substitute for it.

It is often attractive to the people who are not severely distressed and thus would not otherwise seek treatment, but who want to gain insight or increased sensitivity through a structured interaction with others. Group therapy can help people open up areas of thought and feeling that were previously sealed off, enhance their personal growth, and deepen their relationships with others.

This group usually consisting of about 5 to 15 peoples have one or two leaders, or trainers, as the therapist. They generally try to create an atmosphere in which emotional and feelings are stressed.

Family therapy:-

In family therapy, psychological problems are interpreted and treated in a systemic fashion- that is, in the ways that involve the entire family operating as a system.

Disturbed behavior by one family member may be stimulated, or worsened, by disturbed relationships in the family as a whole. Furthermore, the disturbing behavior by one individual usually affects the family as a whole.

Family therapy may begin with one family member being referred for treatment, but family therapists often label this individual “the identified patient”, thus implying that all members of the family are “patients”, or the family as a whole is the patient.

In keeping with this view, most try to arrange sessions in which family members met as a group to discuss problems, family background, and family relationship.  This family interaction becomes grist for the therapist’s mill.

They provide the therapist with an inside look at the patterns of communication, power plays, techniques of control and reinforcement contingencies within the family.

Brief therapy or planned short-term therapy:-

In brief therapy, the main focus is given on the specific problem and on direct intervention. In this therapy, the counselor works in starting in favor of the person in order to treat clinical and subjective conditions faster.


Many therapies are there to help patients. If the patient feels good then the patient can stay longer with the sessions until the patient thinks he/she does not want any further sessions.

If the patient doesn’t feel comfortable with the therapy which is going on, then the patient can switch to other therapists for further sessions.

But before getting started the patient has to tell everything done previously in session so that the therapist can easily understand what the cause for which patient needs counseling.
