Interesting Facts about Hubble Space Telescope.

Stunning space discoveries to date, done by Hubble space telescope is proof that Hubble is the best telescope. 15 interesting facts about Hubble space telescope, will elaborate details of this telescope.

Hubble was always a genius astronaut. In 1924, Hubble the scientist discovered that the spiral Nebula Andromeda is a galaxy, and the astronomer Edwin Hubble used a 100-inch hooker telescope on Mount Wilson near Los Angeles, California to prove this.

Hubble also found out that there are billions of other galaxies such as the Milky Way and all these galaxies are moving away from each other thus there is proof that the universe is expanding.

This discovery could mean the end of the universe is in a near countable number of years. It is from here onwards that the end of the world became a concept.

What Is Hubble Telescope?

Interesting Facts about Hubble Space Telescope.

The idea of Hubble telescope came about as early as 1940, and it was then called the large space telescope. It was a long time later on 24 April 1990 that its first launch took place.

This process took tens of years of planning. The Hubble telescope determined the age of the universe and depicted changes taking place in the celestial bodies and all this makes Hubble one of the universe’s greatest science upgradations.

It was in 1979 that astronauts began training for future missions to service the space telescope

How Hubble Telescope Works?

But, Hubble’s work is not only pointing the telescope to the universe because what stands between the telescope and the universe is the earth’s atmosphere which is made up of gas and dust which hinders and absorbs all light and thus it becomes impossible to observe infrared, UV, X-Rays, and Gamma rays.

NASA and ESA Collaboration for Hubble Mission.

Interesting Facts about Hubble Space Telescope.

Few people know that the Hubble space telescope is an international collaboration between NASA and ESA. NASA takes full credit and responsibility of the Hubble mission and operations, and ESA provides the first faint object camera and solar panels and provides science operations support.

Recent Uses and Interesting Facts about Hubble Space Telescope.

Hubble Telescope Observe Pinwheel Galaxy.

It is during the spring that the view is away from the cloudy Milky Way and reveals a more unobstructed picture of the other galaxies. It was thus that astronomers took developed images of the galaxies including the pinwheel galaxy.

This pinwheel galaxy is near the end of the big dippers handle, and the galaxy is also known as the M101.

The ground-based telescope suggests and reveals that the M101 or the pinwheel galaxy has a spiral shape.

With the eye of the Hubble space telescope, one can also see the individual stars of the pinwheel galaxy.

When it comes to size and shape, the pinwheel galaxy is the same as the Milky Way. Hubble telescope has seen pictures and images of the pinwheel galaxy, and it is showing infrared rays, X rays and all visible waves of light.

X rays and infrared rays allow us to see the galactic gases which are otherwise invisible to the naked eye.

Black Holes and Neutron Stars

Bright X-Ray points have been used to mark the presence of black holes and neutron stars emitting energy which usually consumes the nearby companions.

Hubble Telescope Found Two More Galaxies – M 81 and M82

M81 and M82, the two galaxies both beyond the big dipper’s bowl have been discovered.

Astronauts have opined that these galaxies are relatively closer to the Milky Way as these happen to be only 12 million light-years away. Also, these galaxies, M 81 and M82 are just 1, 50, 000 light-years away from one another.

The telescope has been able to find data on how the two galaxies are going to look taking into account the ground view.

Hubble Telescope Found Leo the Lion

The next discovery of the Hubble telescope is for those who are into astronomy, and they would be glad to know that just next to the great bear is also Leo, the lion, of the astrology symbol.

This is a system of 4 stars, two double stars circling each other. One of these stars is called Regulus. Leo, the lion, is a culmination of a lot of galaxies.

Out of these galaxies, M95 and M96 are more massive spirals. M96 is an asymmetric galaxy that is gravitationally disturbed.

Hubble Telescope Found Southern Crab Of Nebula.

Moving further, you would see the southern Crab Nebula. These images were captured and released on the 29th anniversary of the launch of NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope. The official name of Nebula is Hen 2-104. This sky body is thousands of light-years away from Earth.

Why it is called southern is because it is in the southern hemisphere constellation of Centaurus. It has a red star which is dying, and a burned-out star and a white dwarf. Thus the two stars are in a mish-mash of gas between them. Therefore the whole shape is of an hourglass.

Hubble Telescope Found D100 Galaxy.

Next Hubble telescope use has been discovering The D 100 galaxy which ejects a lot of hydrogen gas as the galaxy moves towards the Coma galaxy cluster.

The tail of hydrogen has a definite shape and structure which implies that magnetic fields are into play at this galaxy. Not just that, the blue stars in the red hydrogen tails are also visible. This is not one blue star, but a collection of 2 lakh stars, which are part of the gas loss in the galaxy.

Why a galaxy loses gas is because the galaxy gets pulled in by gravity, falls inside the volume center of a humungous collection of thousands of galaxies. This then creates a mish-mash of many old and young stars.

This coma cluster of galaxies is 300 million light-years from earth and still seen by the telescope. The phenomenon is crystal clear which goes towards proving the prowess of the scope.

Hubble Telescope Can Tell Us How an Asteroid Dies

Telescope gives you the whole process about how an asteroid dies itself. The asteroid ejects dust-like material in the form of two thin comets like tails, one tail is 8 lakh km long, and 4800 km wide, the shorter tail is 2 lakh km long, and the material of dust finds itself lost in space. The dust release takes the duration of a few hours to a few days

Why an asteroid disseminates is because the sunlight puts too much pressure on the asteroid and the process of disintegrating takes place for 100 million years before Hubble could take snapshots of the asteroid dying, and it is relatively a natural phenomenon to witness.

Technology Transfer of the Hubble Telescope.

You must be wondering about the level of technology transfer that takes place about the Hubble telescope.

Astronauts traveled into space no less than five times to make sure that the telescope got the kind of technological improvements it needed, and astronauts have always been able to provide Hubble with a wealth of new technology that has been asked for by the scientists to have the telescope keep making groundbreaking discoveries.

Star Mapping Algorithms to Save Endangered Animals.

One of these discoveries has been using star mapping algorithms to track endangered animals such as whale sharks to see the white spots on the whale shark’s skin which are as unique to the shark as finger points are to human beings.

Thus, each whale shark becomes rare, and one can count the number of these precious animals

Hubble Telescope Use in Lunar Dust.

Another application of the Hubble telescope has been in the area of lunar dust.

This is concerning work going on the moon’s the South Pole. The process is of creating an electrodynamic dust shield which then goes to the space environment.

This phenomenon means electro fields to remove dust, the EDS goes to the low earth orbit which happens to be very similar to the lunar surface environment, and once this works, the EDS goes to the moon.

EDS has transparent electrodes; the whole apparatus has a switch which can remove all the dirt, and continuously deflects off all the dust.

The use of transparent electrodes is in camera lenses, solar panels, spacesuits and more. EDS works well in a vacuum, and therefore, one can presume that the system would work on the moon too.

This experiment is crucial because no mission on the moon is ever successful entirely because the moon has a lot of dust and the kind of dust that affects the lungs, so this mission could solve the problem of taking purposes to the moon.

Latest Discovery of Cigar Galaxy by Hubble Telescope.

Hubble’s latest news is discovering Galaxy M 82, or the cigar galaxy which produces stars ten times faster than in our universe. This is called a starburst.

This, in turn, destroys the material required to form more stars. Thus, this becomes a self-limiting process. This galaxy is 12 million light-years away from the Earth.

On the 16th anniversary of Hubble, the astronauts captured the visible and infrared mosaic of the outer universe.

The Hubble telescope collated this stunning image, there is the red in the picture which is the hydrogen and infrared wavelength and shows the starburst activity, and the other thing in the image is blue and green-yellow which makes for visible wavelengths of light.

One can remember that hydrogen and infrared are red color, and the rest is evident even with the naked eye depending upon the distance.

Hubble telescope crew is releasing a 6 part mini-series about tools used in Hubble’s service missions, so do watch. I hope this makes you aware of the Hubble telescope benefits and that Hubble Telescope is a successful mission since its beginning.
